Muqaddar Ka Sikandar
Made in 1978, and produced and directed by Prakash Mehra, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar is one of the biggest Bollywood films of all time. It broke box office records to gain ‘Blockbuster’ status, and people would queue in the street for hours to see it in the months following its release. The film, it means ‘Conqueror of Destiny’ in English made more money than any other Bollywood release in 1978, and was the third biggest film of that decade – Sholay and Bobby were the two biggest.
The Plot of the Film
Muqaddar Ka Sikandar starred Amitabh Bachchan as Sikandar, and it was at the height of his Hindi cinema popularity. It’s the tale of a boy, who orphaned at an early age has to work like a slave to survive in the house of a rich man. A muslim lady adopts him and changes his name to Sikandar. He befriends, Kaamna the daughter of the house, but is later banished by her father. Years pass, and he’s a rich man who has never forgotten Kaamna. When he finds that her and her father are now poor, he anonymously supports them. He starts seeing courtesan Zohra, played by Rheka, who won best supporting actrss for the role, but secretly loves Kaamna. He asks his friend Vishal to write a letter to Kaamna for him, but she mistakenly thinks the letter is from Vishal. Vishal, doesn’t know that she is the girl Sikandar’s letter was intended for, and he falls for her and they plan to marry. From there, things get steadily worse until the explosive finale.
This great Bollywood blockbuster is everything that a Hindi film should be. All the right ingredients, a well known and highly popular star, a beautiful and popular co-star Raakhee, who played the part of Kaamna, plus a melodramatic plot, filled with good and evil characters, song and dance and fabulous scenery and costumes.
