Founded half a century ago by Bengali Sashadhar Mukherjee, Filmalaya studios have contributed much to the legend and the lore of filmland. Over a thousand films, many of them very highly critically acclaimed, have been performed at these studios over the years making them a truly historic location.

The stuff of myth and cinematic mystery!

The first film that was made in these legendary studios was ‘Dil Deke Dekho’. The director was the renowned Nasir Hussain and the film was released in 1959. Despite being only the second film that Hussain had directed in his life, ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ was a big hit with audiences across India. This film, a Hindi comedy with a strong romantic element was a cheerful and at times sweet feelgood movie that has been popular ever since. What is more, after the success of Dil Deke Dekho, Hussain went on to become an extremely well known award winning figure in the world of film, for his work both as producer and as director. Thus, from their very beginnings, Filmalaya studios have been the stuff of myth and of cinematic mystery!

The future of the studio is looking bright indeed!

After their glittering past, the future of these studios is looking very bright. Because they are so historic, these studios lack many of the conveniences of more modern studios. Notably, there is no air conditioning system! However, the renovation of the studios is now well underway. The renovation project seeks to modernise the studios as well as to remain true to their rich history. The result is sure to be an extremely exciting future for film, with many more amazing and breathtaking pieces of cinema history to be made in these most wonderful of film studios.
